The second is, does method matter? According to the authors, while ideas in and of themselves are hard to define, the basic history of economics itself is a "history of ideas, because ideas form the raw material of any academic discipline." Yet, they continued, there is a definite distinction between "ideas" and "ideology." Ideology, as the authors describe it, tends to be more dogmatic and restrictive than are ideas. "Classes in society tend to coalesce around particular interests, with each group of interests more often than not confronting an opposing interest group," the authors note. But the focus here isnt necessarily ideas or ideology, but whether such ideas ended up shaping the individual activities that impacted economics. Basically, they note, economic ideas only have importance to society and catch on only when the time is right for acceptance. Furthermore, the authors note, ideas become action "within a framework of policies, constraints or grounds rules that are established through a political process . . ." In other words, ideas can only gain ground if political and sociological institutions end up embracing them. When it comes to this particular theory, the authors are definitely correct. History points out that ideas arent exactly new - for example, Leonardo DaVinci had produced blueprints for flying machines centuries before the Wright Brothers flew the first "heavier than air" aircraft.
