to numerous factors. One of these factors is the structure of the health care system itself. This structure, and the practices and norms that it perpetuates, is particularly interesting when it encounters not one but a multitude of cultures. The efficacy of health care, in fact, sometimes depends on the systems ability to account for different cultural mores. Many health care systems around the world are encountering greater and greater challenges in terms of meeting the needs of a society that is growing more and more multicultural on a daily basis. Some have argued that the U.S. health care system, in particular, is shouldering more than her share of this challenge. The U.S. health care system has evolved over time to provide for the needs of a predominantly white, predominantly Christian, patient base. This evolution does not infer some sort of racial or cultural bias only that certain needs have been presented and the system adjusted to account for those needs. All health care systems, after all, are the product of one culture or another (Mwaura, 2006). Today, however, that patient base in this country and others is becoming more and more diverse. Mwaura (2006) emphasizes that every culture has experienced a similar evolution in their health care system but that this evolution also results in the imprinting of a health and management system with a specific "vision of the person, his or her relationship to other persons, to the cosmos, the environment and invisible reality" (p. 136).
