County. And while it is true that most understand the problems inherent in massive immigration, language difficulties, legal problems and so forth, the region was made famous when Elian
Gonzalez was found floating in an inner tube one Thanksgiving Day. In fact, Americans were surprised when they put on the news on Thanksgiving Day in 1999 only to
hear about a boy found off of the Florida coastline who really was just bopping around in the ocean. It was a miracle that he was alive and while that
seemed to be an appropriate Thanksgiving Day story, the legal and political battle that would ensue was not even a fleeting thought as the American people digested their turkey dinners.
The boy was a Cuban refugee named Elian Gonzalez. The incident soon became an international one. The dilemma became one of controversy as some contended he should not be sent
back to Cuba, while others claimed that the law should be followed and that Elian could not stay in the United States. Years later, the family of Elian Gonzalez wanted
to sue Janet Reno for allowing the boy to be taken away; they wanted to claim that excessive force was used but they were not allowed to proceed with that
claim ("Court rules" B6). In any event, the Elian Gonzalez case allows a student to glimpse what problems are faced by the Cuban immigrant community in Miami. What is
at issue is the fact that in order to live in the United States, a Cuban immigrant has to reach dry land. Failing to do so means that one does
