Each of the relationships detailed in the book presents a strange paradox of passion and distaste, as well as compassion and bewilderment. The most obvious of the adversarial relationships is that between the patrician Celia del Pino and her American dream-fixated daughter, Lourdes. Celias story gives the reader a look at the mystically-tinged realism that is Cuba itself, a country of beauty and poverty, idealism and corruption. The stress and animosity that takes place in the relationship between Celia and Lourdes serves as a metaphor of the much larger animosity that exists between Cuba and the United States. Each longs to repair the relation and each is thoroughly convinced that their viewpoint is the ultimately correct view. The widowed matriarch of the story is a Cuban loyalist, proud to have been part of the evolution of a new Cuba and a fervent believer in the Revolution, just as long as she is able to do her part in working to help her people and work toward their common good. Her oldest daughter, Lourdes, has no patience with her mothers attitudes or her commitment and is determined to make a success of herself in the America of the "free and the brave" where she plans to be a business success with her "Yankee Doodle Bakery." Ironically, it is Lourdes own artistic daughter who has the greatest spiritual ties with her grandmother, Celia. Celia, who loved and lost a Spaniard, once again, not unlike Cuba itself, married the father ...
