-- Tocqueville, in a letter to a friend Alexis de Tocqueville, French aristocrat and magistrate of the courts of France, came to America in 1831, officially to study American prison reforms. Along with fellow magistrate Gustave de Beaumont, Tocquevilles greater purpose was to study American democracy in action. Tocqueville wrote Democracy in America to convince his own countrymen that any fears they had about the American-style democracy were pointless. Ungrounded. (Elster, 1991) Alexis de Tocquevilles Democracy in America is usually seen as a work of political theory. Eugene McCarthy (1978), in his book, America Revisited, calls it the "best frame of reference, both descriptive and analytical, for the examination of American democracy and social institutions" (p. 2). Of course, Tocquevilles vision wasnt exact -- he didnt anticipate the huge number of immigrants that eventually came to America in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries; something which made a significant change to the ethnic and cultural make-up of the United States. He also didnt foresee the growth of major cities, or the changes that were made in transportation and communication. But he wasnt so much visionary as he was a man with a clear insight and ability to examine and note the democratic process in its formative stage, without constraints imposed upon it by monarchs or despots (McCarthy, 1978).
