Discussion The short and simple answer to these questions is "no," because then the play would be something other than what it is. Shakespeare gave us a tragedy of real pathos because it shows us the destruction of a couple who are essentially good, and who had their lives before them. If Othello had seen through Iago, or had more self-confidence, it would not be the same play. Beyond that facile answer, however, lies the complex world of Venetian society that Shakespeare has created. One of the most frustrating things about the play is that Othello, a man of intelligence and undoubted courage, allows Iago to fool him so completely, and with absolutely no real proof to back up his charges. All he does is sew the seeds of doubt in Othellos mind, and from there, the Moor charges to his own destruction. It does really seem that the reason why Iago can so easily fool Othello lie in Othellos psychological makeup, not in any external cause. A man who had a positive self-image, or who truly believed he was worth of Desdemona, would have gone to her and asked for the truth of the matter, trusting that she would tell him. Or he would have laughed at Iago and dismissed his tales as flights of fancy; he would probably also have told Iago to leave his service. But instead he listens to the snake, and destroys himself and his lady; as well as Iagos unfortunately wife Emilia.
