shortages. As teachers retire, there are not enough teachers stepping up to fill their places. Because of several factors such as low pay, more stringent certification programs and
more difficult working environments, teaching is becoming a less attractive occupation all the time. For that reason it is becoming more and more difficult to fill our nations schools
with the numbers of teachers needed for the ever-demanding population of children. School teachers are leaving their professions to do more menial, yet higher paying, jobs. Frank Dawson, a
junior high school science teacher with a Masters Degree left his teaching position last year. "I make more money working in the factory at a defense plant," he explained.
"Not only do I make fifteen thousand more a year grinding rivets than I did teaching, but I get paid time and one-half for my overtime as well.
As a teacher, nobody realizes all the extra hours we have to put in. They all think we leave at 3:00 in the afternoon just like the students."
