What we are left with is the question as to just what has made this system so stable given the numerous political shifts and other factors which have occurred over the history of this country. What we know based on recent political elections is that to stray from our two party system does nothing in an effective sense but much in a counteractive sense. Ross Perot in the national presidential elections and independent party candidates such as Bob Anderson in Albuquerque (Callahan, 1998). It seems that although our country has varied in its political makeup both as a reflection of the president and other major leaders of the time and as a reflection of the social situation of the time our two party political system has held since its inception in the mid 1800s. To vote outside that two party system seems only to serve to divide the vote, not to accomplish the appointal of a non bipartisan. There are three primary reasons that the two party political system has preserved in this country. These reasons include economic factors as well as societal and issue-related factors. They are both structural and historical and they exist both internally and externally. Our political makeup is not only determined by internal factors but also by what is happening in the rest of the world and these same factors interplay as well when looking at impetus for either change or stability.
