and tumultuous events. Hamlet is a classic example of drama, as well as tragedy, in these respects for there are conflicts taking place on many different levels. The following paper examines the conflict in Hamlet, discussing its importance and the type of conflict that exists both outwardly and inwardly. Conflict and Hamlet The conflict in Hamlet begins when Hamlet comes home because his father is dead. This is a powerful conflict within Hamlet that will essentially direct the entire play. Hamlet cannot come to terms with the death (murder) of his father and he feels that something is perhaps wrong. This is primarily because his mother has immediately remarried when she should likely still be in mourning. In Hamlets first words we see how he is torn, how the conflict begins within himself in relationship to the death of his father: "O, that this too too solid flesh would melt/ Thaw and resolve itself into a dew!/ Or that the Everlasting had not fixd/ His canon gainst self-slaughter! O God! God!" (Shakespeare I i 311-314). As the play progresses Hamlet becomes more and more distraught until the ghost arrives and makes his plea. The ghost of his father informs him that he has been murdered and that Hamlet must seek vengeance for the crime. This begins the powerful intrigue in the play that is filled with conflict. In this conflict Hamlet now apparently knows the truth and his internal conflict involves how to go about seeking revenge for his fathers murder. He is a prince and as the story evolves he begins to doubt what the ghost has said perhaps, but more importantly, he has come to realize that he must righteously punish his step father.
