Good leaders would understand the importance of communication and the different approaches that can be adopted in the way they communicate, being able to adapt the method of communication and style utilized to suit the situation. Furthermore, different styles of leadership are likely to be biased towards specific styles of communication. Therefore, the issues of leadership and communication are independent influences in the business environment. In this paper the subject of communication can be considered in the context of leadership, looking at what it meant by communication and how it is used by different leadership styles. Communication is defined by the dictionary as "The exchange of thoughts, messages, or information, as by speech, signals, writing, or behavior" (Dictionary.com, 2008). Communication can take place in a range of conscious and unconscious models in both direct and in direct manners. It can take place unilaterally; one to one, or one to many, or a bilateral manner where there is communication between parties rather than one way communication. For leadership it may be argued that all of the modes of communication are important, but communication to and with a group are the most essential in both unilateral and bilateral modes. Communication may also be formal or informal as well as and vertical or horizontal (Thill and Bovee, 2007). When communication takes place there will be a sender and a receiver, the sending is the person trying to communicate a message, the receivers are those who are meant to receive the message. This is the same, regardless of the type of communication we are considering, from marketing and motivations through to operational instruction and orders. ...
