A large percentage of the instructors today have reported a lack of communication between themselves and the students and list it as one of their major concerns. When a service type industry deals with a human commodity, such as a school and students, discovering the reason for failure can be a complex search. Many begin with the learning style of the student, some cite gender differences as playing a vital role in a students ability to communicate with the teacher, yet others state that something as simple as language can provide a barrier to communication, and thus, learning. Most educators agree with the theory that students all have inherent styles, or styles for gathering and assimilating new material. Some prefer to interact with others, some prefer isolation. Other students seem to learn best by manipulation of objects, while others learn best by simply watching, listening, or reading about what another is showing them. Added to this mix of learning styles the distinct differences between the intuitive learner and the systematic, methodical learner, and one can begin to see the dilemma teachers face when planning a lesson(Cross 89). Even with these diagnostic tools to aid them, teachers are still at a disadvantage. The research and information on these varying learning styles and cognitive styles has come under fire. No one can seem to agree on the exact definition, or therefore, the solution to dealing and communicating with the student(Cross 89).
