Claudius has not only assumed his brothers throne, but also married his widow, Hamlets mother. Hamlet becomes resolved to obey his fathers ghost and have revenge on Claudius. However, Shakespeare makes it clear that Hamlet will not consider that his conflict with Claudius has been fully resolved unless he can inflict on Claudius the same fate as his father, who suffers in purgatory because he died without the benefit of a last confession of his sins. Therefore, Hamlet wants to slay Claudius while his uncle is in the process of committing a crime and thereby, as with his father, prevent him from gaining absolution from his sins (Sterling 3). In Act 3, Hamlet spies Claudius in a chapel and he appears to be praying. It would be easy to slay Claudius at this point, as he kneels. However, since he is praying, to kill him at this point might prevent his punishment after death. Hamlet, therefore, vows to kill Claudius when "he is drunk asleep, or in his rage,/ Or in th incestuous pleasure of his bed/ At game a-swearing, or about some act / That has no relish of salvation int" (III.3.89-93). As this suggests, Hamlet does not wish to merely kill Claudius; he wants to send him to hell. He wants to kill him as he sins so that his soul may be as damnd and black/ As hell, where it goes" (III.3.94-95). Hamlet decides to wait until the ideal moment so that Claudius will be "lured by the most dunning devices to an exquisitely appropriate retribution" (Mercer 215).
