Discussion There is one motif that seems to be woven throughout all the stories from China and that is the difficulty of the relationships between men and women. Other themes that recur are the interference of magical and/or immortal beings in human affairs and the idea of fatalism, but the one that stands out is the problems men and women face when they marry, attempt to marry, or in fact establish any kind of relationship. Western readers are likely to be put off by the subordinate position of the women in these tales, but the men are often shown to be very fond of their wives and sweethearts; they may have a superior position because of the structure of their society, but they seem eager to please the women in their lives, and frequently find that they cannot live without them. Despite the great love and affection on both sides, though, more often than not the relationships turn sour, or end in tragedy. The reader cannot help but feel that the Chinese believe that no matter how hard man tries and plans, God laughs and turns things inside out. Perhaps the most convoluted example of relationships that get mixed up and end badly, only to have things reverse in a startling turn of events, is "The Pearl-Sewn Shirt." In this story, a happily married couple, Chiang Hsing-ko and his wife Fortune, is split apart by the mans travels (many of the men in these stories are travelers, either salesmen or government officials); his wife is left alone and remains faithful for many months, until she is seduced by a young man who glimpses her in the window.1 When they are first married, their relationship seems ideal: "A happy ...
