These two periods of imposed enlightenment are vitally important in their own respective ways, and clearly illustrate the nature of modern Chinese social tradition by way of the recurring pursuit of coveted democracy. A history of political and social oppression served as catalysts for the origin of both movements; while philosophies were similar in theory, a greater transformation was sought in 1919 due to the nature of significant change that was being called to take place (Mitter, 2004). As a representation of the need to break free, this quest for enlightenment was a philosophic movement instrumental in questioning - and ultimately rejecting - what had come to be conventional social, religious and political ideas to make way for a new, more modernistic approach. Indeed, this movement served as the beginning of unique aspirations and an original quest for truth. Japans traditions and their relationship to Japanese historical and political development are understood through such examples as the nations move toward a liberal democracy.
