The Peoples Republic of China is the third largest country in the world. As would be expected given the vast expanse of her lands, China is characterized by a diversity of ecological areas. The Chinese comprise twenty-two percent of the worlds population (Wu). The country is characterized by several distinct cultural and political institutions. Although changes have occurred over the countrys history those changes have been slow coming. Much has still to be resolved in regard to human rights issues in particular. China is extremely interesting from both an ecological perspective and a humanistic and political perspective. Because of the size of the country and various environmental types China is considered to have eight major classifications of the regions within the country. In the north, around fifty five degrees north latitude, are subartic regions and in the south, at twenty degrees north latitude, are tropical lowlands (Waddle). The eastern part has fertile plains but deserts prevail in the west. The southwestern part of China incorporates the Tibetan Highlands, a wide ranging plateau with the Himalaya Mountains on the south side, the Pamir Mountains on the west side and the Kunlun on the north. The northwestern section of China contains the deserts. This section is called the Xinjiang-Mongolian Uplands and due to the remote setting and extreme climate has very few people living there (Waddle). The area between the Eastern Lowlands and the Gobi Desert is known as the Mongolian Border Uplands.
