ABOUT CHILDREACH: LEARNING ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION Childreach is the U.S. member of PLAN. This organization is located all over the world and is a non-profit organization. Helping not only the children but their needy families as well, in every nation imaginable, the organizations website explains about their five domains: * Growing Up Healthy * Learning * Livelihood * Habitat * Building Relationships The organization is "without religious, political or governmental affiliation. We strive to increase understanding and unity among people of different cultures and countries, and to promote the rights and interests of the worlds children" (Childreach 2002, PG). To understand the hardship of health care placed upon the poverty-stricken, it is important to first define poverty itself. Childreach will tell us that poverty is "a state in which one is unable to obtain basic necessities required to sustain a minimally adequate standard of living" (McDowell 1995, PG). In the 1960s, federal agencies used the average cost of food to establish the difference between the impoverished and everyone else (Martinez 1994, PG).
