But they were considered cutting-edge for their time, and they did pave the way for todays technologies. Ultimately, of course, computers shrunk in size to fit on desktops, and ultimately, on laps. Though todays computers are comparatively easy to use, there are a lot of components that ensure the correct data is stored, and can be accessed on demand. These systems include memory and processor units, power systems, cooling systems, input/output PCI cards, and the motherboard. Though the motherboard isnt as visible as, say, the mouse or monitor, its one of the most important pieces on the computer. While the central processing unit, or CPU, performs all the computing jobs, without the motherboard, the computer would have a hard time functioning. In fact, without a functioning motherboard, the computer wouldnt function well at all. What a Motherboard Is The motherboard, also called a system board or planner board or logic board, contains the circuits that operate the computer (Computer Motherboard, 2006). Motherboards typically include functional units of a computer including the central processing unit, microprocessor, memory, the basic input/output system (BIOS), expansion slots and circuitry (Computer Motherboard, 2006).
