2004, the United States, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic signed the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). The purpose of this agreement was to
stimulate free trade between the U.S. and some of its Latin American neighbors (An Overview). The idea behind such free trade agreements as CAFTA (and its relative, the North American
Free Trade Agreement) is to both open markets for all nations concerned, and to provide opportunities for the United States and its Central American partners. Key Features of the Agreement
One main feature of CAFTA is the elimination of tariffs on 80% of all U.S.-manufactured goods, with the remainder phased out over a
few years (An Overview). The agreement also takes into account "virtually every type of trade and commercial exchange between these countries and the United States" (An Overview). Furthermore, CAFTA means
government procurement can take place in the partner countries (An Overview). Also inherent in the agreement is the strengthening of regulatory standards and
environmental protections in Central America and the Dominican Republic, while providing the use of outside monitoring, when necessary (An Overview). Purpose Trade is
