This was a lesson not lost on many medieval Italian cities, where there had been Roman foundations before them, and the building reflect the political environment of the time, we see this if we look at Sienna, Florence and Padua. In Sienna there is a city that was based on the roman development. However, there is an influx of people during the medieval era, where there is increased heed for accommodation and also for the political running of the area. The way the city is developed reflects the desire to keep the populace happy and also to demonstrate the political power of the area. Developments that can be looked at include the city centre that has a shell like shape and is still seen as one of the cost attractive medieval city centres that remain today. This was a develop that place appearance as important as function. The Palazzo Pubblico makes the straight side of this shell, this was built in the early fourteenth century. The Torre del Mangia built between 1325-1344 and the Cappella di Piazza built in 1352 are opposite the latter built Loggia della Mercanzia, this was constructed between 1417 and 1428.
