is interesting to examine the lives of some of the great artists of Brazil and see what factors influenced their works. Whether is was their upbringing or the happenings of the country at the time, the influences in some of the artists are clear, while in others they are not so clear. Art is largely a subjective discussion because as the old saying goes, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". While this is indeed true, it is also possible to analyze artistic works strictly from an objective point of view. The artists who follow will be examined both for their contributions to the world of art as well as to discover a bit of the history of their lives. Hopefully this will produce a better understanding in terms of their artistic works. Candido Portinari Candido Portinari is considered by many to be the best Brazilian painter to date (Candido Portinari, 2002). And still others have been quite vocal in criticizing his works (Candido Portinari, 2002). His critics claim he lacked originality and site Picasso as his obvious source of inspiration (Candido Portinari, 2002). One of the more interesting aspects of Portinari were the obvious contradictions between his life and his works (Candido Portinari, 2002). For example, although he was a staunch Communist, he made the official portrait of the dictator Getulio Vargas (Candido Portinari, 2002). He was a confirmed atheist and yet often painted the images of saints (Candido Portinari, 2002). Portinari was an avid painter and painted quickly and often (Candido Portinari, 2002).
