leader. Garveys leadership style was based on written publications and lectures but his presentation was more theatrical that those of other black leaders of his time like W.E.B. Du Bois. He is remembered for his plumed hat and purple robes fitting a king, attire that he wore at one of his speeches that drew thousands to Madison Square Gardens (Grant, 2008). Despite his theatrical presentations, Garvey message was one of the most down to earth blacks were ever to receive. Garvey fleshed out his ideas on the black plight and how to improve it through extensive self reading and through his associations with other prominent black leaders. He was particularly impressed with Booker T. Washington and the Tuskeegee Institute, a school designed specifically to educate blacks and to give them the skills needed to make their way in the world. Born on Jamaica on August 17, 1887 to Mosiah Garvey Sr. and Sarah Jane Richards, Marcus Garvey was one of eleven children and had access not just to his fathers large library but also to his uncles. He made good use of both. During his early twenties he found work in a variety of occupations in Jamaica, Central American, Panama, and London but tended to gravitate to the printing and publishing industry. He even established the newspaper "The Watchman", but only published three issues of it before it floundered.
