- required institutionalization, bipolar disorder is both common and treatable. The vastness of this mental illness is such that nearly six million people across the United States are diagnosed
on a yearly basis, a statistic that equates to 2.6 percent of the entire American population (National Institute of Mental Health, 2006). Identified as spanning the extremes of what
is considered to be normal behavior, this particular type of depression lifts its victims into the crazed physical and mental hype of mania and then drops them down to the
depths of despair, occurrences that can be mere minutes apart when they happen. Indicators include anger, aggression, hyperactivity, sleep depravity, poor judgment and rushed speech. Understanding the causes
and treatment options provides a significantly better realization of just how much a part of American society this mental illness truly is. II. CAUSES Linking the association of serotonin
to psychological behaviors that has been substantiated by scientific research finds one considering a most common disorder: bipolar disorder. Chemical imbalance in the brain has long been thought to
be the cause, but researchers at Washington University have discovered possible structural abnormalities in the brain as well. The prefrontal cortex has been found to be smaller in the
brains of bipolar depressed individuals, inasmuch as they have been found to have a drastically smaller volume of a section of the left PFC that sits behind the bridge of
