and Gimaud" Research Compiled for Enterprises Inc By , January 2013 To Use This Report Correctly, Please The Baroque period in art, which began in the late sixteenth century in Italy and continued until the 1800s, was one during which the primary aim of the artist was to communicate with the audience on both a physical and emotional level, and therefore all forms of art would combine in an unity which attempted to achieve this. This applied both the juxtaposition of materials, and the juxtaposition of different mediums. The actual term baroque comes from a Portuguese word meaning misshapen, and so despite the beauty of much Baroque art, it was actually defined as being imperfect, or absurd. However, one of the themes of the Baroque was a rejection of the concept of conformity which characterised the thinking of the counter-Reformation, and therefore the art of the period could also be seen as a rejection of stylisation and an introduction of new and exploratory forms. However, the term has now also come to mean other forms of grotesquerie or absurdity in art, as well as the specific period which it defines.
