Franklin was one of the Renaissance men of American history, devoting his life to the pursuit of truth. He was a printer, inventor, and diplomat, each impressive titles in
and of themselves. He was also an author whose impact upon American literature, though often unrecognized because of his other monumental achievements, is, nonetheless, equally profound. As several
educators have pointed out, while Franklin was a writer, his mostly whimsical and informational pieces have kept literary scholars from accepting Franklin as an influential author (Larson franklin.html). To
fully understand the impact of Benjamin Franklin upon American literature, it is recommended that the student consider the times in which he lived and wrote (Larson franklin.html). The rhetorical
and satirical writing of British statesmen and humorists were most popular in colonial America, and was the style which most appealed to Franklin. As a youngster, books introduced
the impoverished Benjamin Franklin to a new and exciting world. Franklin recalled in his autobiography, "From a child I was fond of reading, and all the little money that
came into my hands was ever laid out in books" (10). The authors who made the greatest impression on him were those who wrote persuasively on a wide variety
of subjects. Franklin had an insatiable need to know, and at an early age, he recognized that through words, he could positively influence American readers as he, himself, had
been. However, nobodys perfect, even the great Ben Franklin, and as he noted in his autobiography, his writing style needed much refinement, which was received through the criticisms of
