Ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian cultures resulted from a complexity of political, religious and economic factors. This factors interplayed to shape many visible features of Greek culture. One of the more interesting of these features can be found in the sports of each of these cultures. It can be contended that: the sports of these cultures equated to much more than a simple recreational diversion. Indeed, sports were closely interrelated with many other aspects of the cultures, not the least of which were politics and religion. Ancient Romans, Greeks, and Egyptians alike had a well developed sporting interests. This interest is commonly in the various art forms of the respective cultures. Everything from their pottery to their architecture encompasses several renditions of the manner in which various sports impacted their culture. The Greeks enjoyed a variety of sporting activities. These included athletics, boxing, wrestling, and chariot racing. Virgil even describes a boat race where: "The crews are straining at the oars; the crowd on shore is cheering wildly. Each boat must sail out to sea, swing around a huge rock, and return to shore"1. There were many diverse sports in these culture, in fact.
