The most popular types f assessment instruments used in schools are norm-referenced as this gives a comparison to other children in the same age group. One assessment instrument used is that of the British Pictures Vocabulary Scale. This is a norm-referenced tool which means that the individual taking the test could them be placed in the achievement of the group they are within. The best known norm-referenced test is a standard IQ test. The test was undertaken with several aspects in mind. The first was to assess the vocabulary comprehension of the pupil. This is separate from the use of the English languages as it tests the understanding of the language. This therefore, it also a tool that may indicate those who may have some learning difficulties and the extent of those difficulties as well as the level of attainment. This is also valuable where there are pupils that do not have English as a first language (Elwell, 1997). The test is flexible and can be used by pupils up to the age of eighteen years of age (Elwell, 1997). It is also useful for pupils that suffer from dyslexia as it relies on spoken words rather than written words to assess comprehension Elwell, 1997). The test is carried out with the use of pictures.
