One of the drugs that has contradicted this trend has been aspirin; not only has the drug remained popular, new uses have been discovered with a greater amount of beneficial medical uses than had even been imagined. When we talk about the drug aspirin we are really talking about acetylsalicylic acid. Aspirin is a brand name that was given to this substance by the German drug company Bayer. It was this company that brought the drug to the mass manufacturing process and made it available commercial. However, the name has become seen as a generic name in the eyes of may consumers, despite the fact that in many countries the name aspirin is still registered as a trademark. This perception may be due to the fact that the drug was first synthesised and made commercially available more than a century ago (Anonymous 2002). Aspirin, is a member of the family of Salicylates and is generally seen as a member of the NSAID family of drugs (non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs). The main uses for acetylsalicylic acid are as a analgesic and antipyretic and as an anti-inflammatory; it is used to relieve pain, bring down temperatures and it has also been discovered that as a side effect this also has the ability to help prevent strokes and heart attacks (Anonymous 2002) For these latter conditions it is usual that a small dose will be prescribed as a preventive measure after the first attack has been suffered.
