Von Huben 7/2010 Please Introduction Today, it seems like half the world is locked up while the other half watches it. Prison populations all over the globe are exploding, with the United States as one of the leaders in incarcerating its citizens. This paper argues that simply locking people away isnt the answer; they must be given a chance to improve themselves and education is a key. Discussion The United States has retained its frontier mentality and a love of simplistic explanations of human behavior, as reflected in the success of increasingly violent films and TV shows, as well as our intense love affair with guns. After 9/11 Americas xenophobia, never very deeply buried, came roaring to the surface to increase the distrust most Americans seem to have for anyone who isnt exactly like them. In such a climate of uneasiness, things like the ludicrous "three strikes" laws were passed without difficulty, and inhumane dungeons, known as "supermax" prisons like the one in Pelican Bay, California, were constructed. At the same time, Americans still believe (or tried to believe) that a prison sentence is both punishment and an opportunity for rehabilitation, though many people seem to have gone back to the "lock em up and throw away the key" mentality, even for relatively minor offenses. Society is in an uproar, much of the nastiness stirred up by the likes of Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh, whose hate speech earns them high ratings and large incomes.
