This paper considers the proposition that the gender of the President of the United States should not matter, only his or her ability to do the job, and examines arguments on both sides of the issue. Discussion We want to examine two arguments against a woman President in particular: first, that women generally are accorded less respect in society than men, and therefore would not command the respect necessary for a President to function properly. The second argument is that the older generation would not accept a woman president but younger people would be open to it. Its true that women have been accorded supporting roles by society. In spite of decades of proving themselves as everything from doctors to physicists to astronauts to Congresspersons and Senators, society still has strong ideas of which roles are "suitable" for women and which are not. By and large, women are most valued in connection with their functions as wives and mothers; anything they accomplish as single women, or childless women, is somehow not as important as getting married and having children. This is such a deep-seated prejudice that we may never overcome it; changes are coming, but they are extremely slow to materialize. Polling reveals that a vast majority of Americans - over 90% in some polls - say that the time has come to elect a woman President. Surprisingly, the traditional arguments mentioned above may not be as important as first thought. Of course the woman most often mentioned as the likely person to win the office is Hillary Clinton.
