That explains why, though foreign sales accounted for 51% of total revenue in the second quarter of 2000, Apple Computer has made no inroads in this country. There are several reasons why now would be a good time to consider changing this fact. This paper will provide an analysis of financial indicators, both for Apple Computer and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which will explain why there have been no inroads in the past and what factors have changed to make such a move at this time advantageous. Apple Computer, based in Cupertino, Calif., originated the personal computer in the late 1970s with the Apple II. After rival IBM introduced the PC in 1980 and put its considerable industrial might behind the platform, Apple responded with the Macintosh in 1984, which played on the relative difficulty of use of the PC-based system (Schlender, 2000). With the PC operating system becoming more user-friendly, however (borrowing largely from Apple?s own system), and a series of questionable marketing decisions, Apple?s market share dwindled to 4% domestically and the company was threatened with extinction. Beginning in 1998, however, with the return of original CEO Steve Jobs, the company introduced a series of extremely successful computers, which brought its U.S. market share back up to 10%. Overseas, it has maintained dominance, however, with as much as 30% of market share internationally, this in spite of the fact that it has distribution bases in relatively few locations (Schlender, 2000). At a time when computer prices are falling and many in the industry are reaching a plateau, Apple is surging, with a second quarter 2000 profit of $233 million.
