One of the more interesting complexities inherent in Shakespeares Antony and Cleopatra is the way in which he presents not only a contrast between the world of Rome
and that of Egypt, but also the contradictions which are inherent in the Roman world itself, especially as exemplified by the characters of Antony himself and Julius Caesar. On the
one hand, we have the overt differences between the rationality and military discipline of Rome and the sensuality and mystery of Egypt, and on the other, the strengths and weakness
of Rome itself, brought into focus through the attitudes and actions of Antony and Caesar.
Shakespeare is, therefore, presenting a number of different perspectives and worldviews, without setting any one of them as significantly
superior to the others, in a way which may leave the audience somewhat confused but at the same time makes it clear that there is no single correct way to
view the contrasts and conflicts between the various perspectives.
Rome itself is portrayed as moving from a society dominated by heroes, such as Julius Caesar and Pompey, to one which is more fragmented
and characterised by the struggle for political power amongst smaller and less heroic figures, such as Octavius: there is, therefore, an element of degeneration and devolution about Roman society even
at the start of the play. Antony, for example, is at the same time a member of the old guard of warrior heroes, since he is a contemporary of Pompey,
