The development of packages such as SPSS allow for the testing of data in an easy to understand manner, In this paper we will create a data set and then analyse the data using SPSS. The value of SPSS is in correlating and examining data that is presented., The limitation is the program will rely on the data presented being entered accurately. This does not give an interpretation of the data, this is left to the programme user. For the purposes of this paper a primary survey has been carried out to assess the impact of religion on life. The hypothesis is that formalised religion is becoming less important to younger generations, measured by a lower regular attendance at formalised places of worship, but spiritual beliefs, such as a belief in life after death (either reincarnation or an afterlife) is not reliant on the practice of formalised religion or the perception of ones self as religious. The data for this has been collected from a sample of 60, 30 respondents who classify themselves as religious and 30 who classify themselves as not religious. The sample were asked a series of questions, would they class themselves as religious, do they attend a formal place of worship and do they believe in life after death. There is plenty of scope for this to be extended. Both sets of respondents have been as stratified as possible to give a representation of society so that the results can be applied to a broader sample range.
