decentralization, many do support its premises and see the concept as important to the communities of the future. Essentially, it does seem that certain aspects of large cities do not work which is why some urban planners are looking at decentralization. Communities want to take back their neighborhoods and not be so reliant on the centralized government that characterizes large urban centers such as New York and Cincinnati. New York City is a good example of the problem and the solution at the same time. For instance, its school system is centralized to a great extent. People in the Bronx may not know anyone on Staten Island--they are in two separate worlds--but they share a Board of Education. On the other hand, communities have sprung up all over the city and boast strong individual governmental bodies and school associations in an effort to take back some control of their neighborhoods. While they will all be living under one mayoral administration, individual communities can make a difference in terms of the unique neighborhoods in which they reside. Park Slope in Brooklyn is an example of a community that is part of a large city but has to some extent displayed what decentralization can do. Community Board #6 is attached to Park Slope and is responsible for things like community services, sanitation matters, tree problems, street lights, and abandoned cars as well as everything from potholes to park concerns ("Park Slope Reader," 2004). The Fifth Avenue Committee happens to be a community development corporation which is involved with things like housing rehabilitation and repairs (2004). It also involves itself with job training, drug and crime prevention and education, amongst other things (2004).
