Influence of tradition Early in Achebes novel, the narrator, Umuofia says, " Fortunately among these people a man was judged according to his worth and not according to the worth of his father" (6). Ancestors are of course honored; we can see that through the conversations of the elders, he dialogue that elders Ezeudu, Ezenwa, and Obierika. This is a most honorable system, and one that idealistically we as westerners claim that we choose to emulate. It is a historical fact that for years United States stance in other parts of the world, got us labeled the "ugly Americans." That had nothing to do with our physical beauty, but rather our arrogant presentation of preference, or supposed knowledge.
