Very few, in all probability, reflect on the fact that this major American holiday was created to honor working men and women, the "blue collar" folks who work with their hands, and whose labor built the nation. This paper reflects on labor in the United States and some of the issues surrounding it. Discussion There were two important movements in recent human history that changed the face of labor forever. The first was the Industrial Revolution, which ushered in such things as factories, assembly lines, and mass production. The second has been the rise of the "Information Age," in which people who handle technology have become the "movers and shakers" in our society. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it has had a rather unfortunate result: we no longer value those people who work with their hands. It is the farmers, ranchers, carpenters, plumbers, builders and others like them who founded the nation and led it into the 20th century. Now we seem to have forgotten their contributions, and in fact we tend to look down on them, completely overlooking the fact that not everything can be robotized, done by a computer, or handled remotely. Its only recently that society has "devalued" the common laborer and put the machine in his place. But the machine has not always been kind to man. In fact, labor unions came into being almost as soon as factories were industrialized, and for a very good reason: the factory owners, enchanted with the speed the machines provided, drove their employees like slaves. They frequently worked 12 hour days or longer; children were routinely put to work in factories; wages were low and conditions were harsh.
