With the price of gas, and the concern about the harm auto emissions does to the environment, alternative car prototypes have been developed. Four different ideas include the electric, natural gas, hydrogen and fuel cell motor vehicle types. There are others as well, such as hybrids that are already on the market. In exploring the different alternatives, there are advantages and disadvantages economically and environmentally of each. The electric vehicle is something that can be better for the environment than the gas powered cars in use today. However, its primary drawback is that there is a limited range between charging times (Wouk, Retseck & Johnson, 1997). That is, the electric car can only go so far before needing to be recharged. This is logical, but when someone is embarking on a cross country trip for example, an electric car would cause much inconvenience, even if power charging stations were a part of the future. A battery may need three to eight hours to recharge (Wouk, Retseck & Johnson, 1997). Hybrids of course have the advantage of utilizing electricity for power, but because it uses gas as well, it is able to make the long trips (Wouk, Retseck & Johnson, 1997). Of course, the electric vehicle would need more work before it can be used practically. Also, hybrids are more expensive than other cars, so economics play a role when choosing a vehicle. A purely electric car would be very expensive as well. However, one would save money because there would be no gas station visits.
