cool. His commitment to the environment and his activism in sounding the warning on the seriousness of the situation won him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. This paper analyzes the lecture he gave when he accepted the award. Discussion Al Gores speech shows that the man is an absolute master of rhetorical technique. It starts with an interesting and relevant "hook," then flows logically from point to point as Gore presents the evidence he has gathered to support his arguments. He then explains the extent of the problem and finally, what can be done to solve it. His "hook" is the statement that sometimes the future "knocks on our door with a precious and painful vision of what might be" (Gore, 2007). He then mentions that an inventor read his own obituary in which the reporter said some unfavorable things, which led the inventor to rethink his life and the work he was doing. The inventor was Alfred Nobel, after whom the prize is named, and the invention is dynamite, which he intended for peaceful use but which is widely exploited in war (Gore, 2007). He was widely referred to, much to his distress, as the "Merchant of Death" (Gore, 2007). Nobel was so upset by these accusations that he changed the entire course of his life, and decided to "serve the cause of peace" (Gore, 2007). Gore uses this anecdote to segue into a comment about his loss of the U.S. presidential election, and how that loss, rather than ruining his life, set him even more firmly on his path toward serving the environment only now, he was looking for newer, fresher ways to achieve his objective (Gore, 2007).
