Dona Beatriz Kimpa Vita, a Congolese woman, founded a religious movement that reinterpreted "Jesus, Mary and St. Francis" as Congolese (Parker and Rathbone, 2007, p. 73). When she fell into the hands of warring factions during a civil war, she was put to death for heresy in 1706; nevertheless, her religious perspective is typical of the way in which Africans integrated Christian and Islamic beliefs into the local cultures (Parker and Rathbone, 2007). North Africa was prominent in Christianity from the faiths early history, as North Africa was home to Augustine of Hippo. But it was in Ethiopia that Parker and Rathbone (2007) indicate that Christianity became most deeply embedded, as the Ethiopian church was able to resist the expansion of Islam. Like Christianity, in Africa, Islam took on localized form that varied from country to country. African Islam encompasses a wide variety of forms, which range from "heterodox Sufi orders to the most orthodox reformist movements" (Parker and Rathbone, 2007, p. 75). Powers indicates that Reverend Isaac Taylor, the Canon of York, announced to a British audience in 1897 that failed in its mission to civilize the "savage, barbarous Africans" (Powers, 2000).
