Beattie has said that life is capricious, that sometimes it is quite gentle and warm, but sometimes it pushes you off a cliff. I found one of the "cliffs"
in my life at a district track and field competition. The Cliff I had been looking forward to the district competition that year.
I took first place in the boys pole vaulting event the previous year, and I was eager to try to repeat that accomplishment. I felt that everything was
fine and it was going to be a glorious vault, nothing more than a repeat of the countless vaults I had done both in practice and in competition. I
had no forewarning that my vault would be notable for anything but perfection: I had spent so many hours in practice and had completed hundreds of vaults without incident that
the actions involved had become automatic. It was just another vault, but it would forever change my life. I was third on
the roster of vaulters and I was pumped. The height I would be going in at was 8 6, which was my usual beginning height. I watched as the
other vaulters ran, planted their poles in the box and soared through the air. They were so graceful. Then it was my turn. I went to my mark and began
to practice the plant of the pole that I was about to execute. Though I knew that this would be "just another vault,"
