concerned not so much with Africa as with the deterioration of one European mind caused by solitude and sickness...Can nobody see the preposterous and perverse arrogance in thus reducing Africa to the role of props for the break-up of one petty European mind?" The real question, according to Achebe, is whether or not the dehumanization, which depersonalizes a portion of the human race, can be considered a great work of art. Considering this perspective, an examination of Achebes classic novel Things Fall Apart reveals that the author intentionally crafts his work to be a reversal of the representation seen in Conrads novel. In Heart of Darkness, Kurtz is a "company man" who comes to Africa with his head brimming with idealistic notions of bringing the joys of European civilization to the primitive people of the Dark Continent. However, instead of "civilizing" the natives, Kurtz finds that the power of his position as a white man corrupts him, bringing out primitive cruelty in his soul that Kurtz had no idea was within him. Conrad writes: "...the wilderness had found him out early...I think it had whispered to him things about himself, which he did not know, things of which he had no conception till he took counsel with this great solitude" (73). Kurtz allows all of his most primitive desires to run rampant. The experience of being away from all the restrictions of civilization serves to strip away his "civilized" veneer. Okonkwo, the great Igbo warrior of Achebes novel, also suffers a tragic downfall, but his occurs because of his dogged determination to abide by the long-held traditions of his society. Where Kurtz abandons his European morals and sensibilities, Okonkwos actions are derived entirely from tradition, a militaristic tradition that valued his strength and his temper. Within ...
