have to fight to retain their funding or face being cut. This can be problematic when private funds specify their use in some programs over others, and over the years
there has been an observed trend for private funding to favor athletic programs at the exception of academic programs. Consequently, many noteworthy academic programs have been cut due to lack
of funding while athletic programs typically dont face similar problems. This paper will explore this disparity with an eye towards a symbiotic solution. This paragraph helps the student establish the
severity of the situation. In order to properly appreciate the magnitude of the situation at hand, one might look at some of the notable casualties of the "crowding out" of
academic programs by athletic programs. For instance, at the University of Florida in Gainesville, lack of funding was responsible for the recent dissolution of that universitys doctorate of philosophy program.
This is a catastrophic loss for the discipline of philosophy as the institutions program was consistently rated among the top ten such programs in the country. By way of contrast,
the University of Floridas football coach routinely receives a salary of more than a million dollars annually. Clearly, this is antithetical to the Universitys established principles and purpose of providing
high class pedagogy, a mission to which sports are supposed to be tangential. Approaching the topic from the opposing perspective, one might make the claim that athletic programs are essential
to the success and solvency of universities. This is likely true, however it is not merely that funds are being diverted from academic programs towards athletic programs, but rather than
