to figure out in this paper. What is your best guess for how your taxes are spent? There is very little "guesswork"
involved in terms of tracking how taxes are spent; according to the website Federalbudget.com, a good chunk of taxes, unbelievably, goes toward healthcare, with the treasury (including payment of debt)
and defense coming in a close second. A good chunk also goes ton the Social Security administration (Federalbudget.com, 2009). The Tax Policy Center, in between discussions about mandatory vs. discretionary
spending have come up with roughly the same results; namely that mandatory spending (such as entitlements, such as things like Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security) ended up making up 54%
of mandatory spending in 2008, with 38% focused on discretionary spending (The Numbers, 2008). The remaining 8% is interest (The Numbers, 2008). Though 8% may seem like a paltry amount,
lets keep in mind that were talking about a trillion-dollar-plus budget. Eight percent of something like that still represents billions of taxpayer money.
Going further, the Tax Policy Center points out that the composition of mandatory spending dedicated 34% to Social Security, 25% to Medicare and 13% to Medicaid (The Numbers, 2008).
In other words, 72% of mandatory spending goes to entitlement programs, with a good chunk of that dedicated to healthcare. On the other side of the coin, the discretionary side,
