Insignia can be found among gangs in the street to trademarks for cartoons. However, few of these have the history or tradition that the insignia of the armed forces have, especially the air force. The Air Force, itself, was not a separate entity from the other armed forces until 1918 with the creation of the National Security Act Amendment which made the Air Force a military department within the newly organized Department of Defense(US Dept. of Air force 2002). Since its inception, the air force has continued to remind those in the military of their contribution to the intelligence community, research and development(especially in the areas of outer space), and in providing long range military solutions which in the long term protect the ground forces and may make their presence unnecessary. When the Air force became a separate entity, the insignia was developed that would stand for several things. That bravery and courage would be a part of this, there was no doubt. The Chevron was adopted, though it was not a new idea. The chevron (which looks like a squat diamond standing on its end), used to be worn by both officers and enlisted, but later were relegated just to the enlisted personnel(Air force News 2002). It would seem, that even if the design itself was decided, the direction in which the chevron pointed changed with the decades.
