The impact to the workplace is that human resources departments have had to design programs that empower employees to deal with the emotional trauma experienced when confronted with reality of working with PWAs. In addition, the PWA has a right to privacy that must also be conveyed to employees. Impacts also include a drop in productivity, inability of some employees to interact with the PWA for the reasons specified above, and explaining to employees why the employee may appear to be receiving special treatment (additional sick leave, etc.). There are associated training costs to already overburdened HR departments, plus the added burden of training in an area where some employees still want to invoke moral reasons for not receiving an education in AIDS awareness. Corporations are resistant to teaching facts about AIDS in the workplace for various reasons. Inon Schenker, head of the Jerusalem AIDS Project, says that AIDS information should be taught to incoming workers in the same manner in which "occupational accidents are explained to them." (Siegel, p. 12). Barry Lawrence, spokesman for the Alexandria, Va.-based Society for Human Resource Management, explains that for many companies, the problem is economics. He states: "Companies have so many other things on their table. They have profit margins to worry about, they have sexual harassment, diversity concerns. Theres so much vying for their attention."
