this is the general thinking when it comes to careers in accounting. Nor has the profession been helped by the recent corporate scandals. Enron, WorldCom and Global Crossing, to name
a few companies, went bankrupt because of shady accounting practices, in some cases precipitated by Arthur Andersen, one of the well-known and most respected accounting firms in the United States.
Because of this, the accounting profession is taking a bit of a beating and is having to shake off a negative image.
The truth is, however, that accounting is probably among the oldest professions in history, with roots stretching back several millennia. The fact is that accountings ability to survive reflects the
ability of the profession - and the people within it - to change. Todays accountants are more than numbers crunchers as a result of the constant historical impact has had
on the industry. In addition, some experts believe that the accounting profession has actually helped make history, as without certain accounting practices in place, major turning points of history likely
