entails many regions and regiments throughout the nation at the time. One story of black soldiers involves the 1st and 2nd Volunteer regiment of South Carolina. Stephen V. Ashs work, Firebrand of Liberty, is a book that examines the history of these regiments as they embarked, and fought, upon an expedition/battle that would prove to many that African Americans were very valid individuals and soldiers. The following paper offers a book report of the work. A Report on Firebrand of Liberty by Ash Ashs story essentially begins in 1863, but the infantry was organized the year prior to that. It was first formed by General David Hunter and "This first effort to form a black regiment met with failure, initially due to two significant causes: first, Hunter had not received authorization from the War Department in Washington allowing the formation of Black Units and" that the individuals seemed to be brought into the service in a manner that was similar to being brought into slavery which did not work (Kennington, 2009). As a result this particular first regiment was dissolved. Then another attempt was made, this time led by General Rufus B. Saxon who apparently desired to demonstrate how well the Africans could fight. They traveled along the coast of Georgia and Florida under Colonel Oliver T. Beards command (Kennington, 2009). Their expedition, and raids, proved successful in gaining access to lumber, rice and also in liberating 155 slaves (Kennington, 2009). It was after this that Colonel Thomas Wentworth Higginson gained control of the 1st S.C. infantry and under his control they learned to truly fight.
