into three categories: Freshman, who are often immature and right out of high school; Seniors, who demonstrate a level of personal security and have developed their identity; and individuals who are 10 year veterans who have returned to college for the completion of their general education requirements. The student has outlined these as the main categories for college students, but this would make for an incomplete essay. The student, then, should also include Sophomores, Juniors and Graduate students, and list at least one characteristic that separates each of these groups from members of the other three categories listed. Individuals who fit into the first category of Freshman often demonstrate common characteristics. Freshman are individuals who are right out of high school, who often lack maturity and sometimes have difficulties making the transition into the college environment. Freshman generally fall into an age range between 17-19 years of age, though variations do exist. The most common characteristics of individuals who fit into the category of Freshman, though, is that they are registered as a Freshman with a college or university and are starting with entry level coursework, including Freshman seminar classes and introductory courses in a variety of subjects. Freshman are not required to declare their majors, and commonly take a variety of courses in order to determine which course of study suits their particular interests. Individuals who fit into the second category, Seniors, share common characteristics among themselves that they do not share with groups like Freshman. Seniors have completed 3 or more of their 4 years of study, have completed most of the coursework for their major, have declared a major, and are preparing for graduation.
