Brave New World come from a phrase from Shakespeares Tempest. A quick summary of Huxleys Brave New World would show a society that is kept blissfully ignorant of their state in life. Every aspect of their life is controlled from birth. They know neither pain or sadness, and even though there is a high degree of segregation among the population, it does not seem to cause strife immediately. The story takes place in the fictional time of 632 A.F., which is a reference to the automobile industry, FORD. Part of the post-natal conditioning employs the use of subliminal phrases being repeated over while the infants sleep, with the thought that this will instill a sense of morality and ethics. All trace of individualism is gone, but the people dont seem to mind as long as they receive SOMA, which is a type of euphoric drug. Bernard Marx, of course, doesnt fit into this regimented lifestyle. Viewed as an outcast, even though he is part of the Alpha group, he is a bit of a loner. He makes a trip to the Savage Reservations and takes a girl along that he hopes to form a relationship with. However, the reader is informed right away that permanent relationships are frowned upon, as is religion, motherhood, or live birth. While at the Reservations, Bernard meets some of the people who live there. He begins to realize that the World Controllers that dispensed the SOMA and ruled their society had dark secrets. About to be transferred to Iceland, he perceives a plan to escape that assignment by blackmailing the reservations director with the secret of an illicit affair that produced a live birth.
