Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations (NASDAQ). At one time, NASDAQ was also known as the "over-the-counter" exchange (in that stocks were purchased and sold through a bid-ask method rather than a straight pricing strategy), but you dont hear it called "over the counter" much these days. The one thing both of these exchanges have in common is they exchange equity between buyers and sellers (NYSE and NASDAQ: How They Work, 2009). But equity exchanges are about the only thing these two organizations have in common; they have more differences than similarities. One huge difference between these two exchanges is location; while stocks on the NYSE trade in a specific, physical place (on Wall Street) with help from traders, stocks on NASDAQ trade via a telecommunications network, and trading takes place directly between investors and their buyers and sellers (NYSE and NASDAQ: How They Work, 2009). Furthermore, NASDAQ is a dealers market - stocks are sold through a dealer (hence the "bid" and "ask"); and these dealers make the market (NYSE and NASDAQ: How They Work, 2009). The NYSE, on the other hand, is an auction market; prices are more set by supply and demand than by specific dealers (NYSE and NASDAQ: How They Work, 2009). Finally, the main difference between these two exchanges is the types of equity exchanged. While the NYSE tends to be made up of older, more established companies (also known as "blue-chip" companies), the NASDAQ tends to attract Internet, technology and newer energy companies. As such, the NASDAQ stocks tend to be more volatile than their more staid counterparts on the NYSE exchange. ...
