their rediscovery of past cultures, belief systems, and artwork, which had been descried as having brought Gods wrath upon them in the form of the plague. Those in power used the artists of the day to depict them in favorable ways as a form of early advertising. Gone were the strictly liturgical paintings and sculptures. In the end, the plague changed the course of human history, its economics, its social structures, even the culture. This is certainly reflected in the comparison of Dutch to French painters during the centuries that would follow the plague years. Actually, if one were to compare where Europe was in reference to the rest of the world, particularly Asia, one would see that Europes artistic climate had not progressed as rapidly(Age of Enlightenment). Up until the sixteenth century, most of the art was liturgical in nature, placing Christ and other Biblically inspired figures in contemporary settings. However, change was in the air. In fact, with the onset of the age of Enlightenment, the very iron grasp of the Church was challenged. As a result the subject matter of most artists began to shift. However, there were a few holdouts to the old ways. During this time, it was determined that mankind was capable of being redeemed, that contrary to what the church stated, mankind was not inherently evil. Human history, with a few exceptions, was now gauged by human progress. The Dutch Painters (also called Flemish in many reports) tended to reject the proscribed form dictated by Italy (read Rome and the Vatican) and instead began painting landscapes, exploring symbolism and fantasy themes.
